24-year-old held for ‘raping’ 2-year-old

The Chandigarh Police on Thursday arrested a father of two for allegedly raping a two-year-old neighbour.

The mother of the victim, who had to answer nature's call, had asked the accused to keep a watch on her daughter till she returned. The accused instead allegedly raped the minor girl.

The victim was rushed to a hospital and she had to undergo a surgery due to grave injuries. Her condition is critical.

According to the police, the accused, Sandeep, is a neighbour of the victim residing in Sector 52. Around 9.30 pm on Wednesday, the victim's mother left the house as she had to answer nature's call. Since the victim's father was not present in the house, the mother asked Sandeep to keep a watch on her daughter as she did not wish to leave her alone. Realising that no elder member in the family was present in the house, Sandeep allegedly raped the victim. The victim's father is a fruit seller and usually returns home after 10 pm.

When the victim's mother returned, she saw her daughter crying and Sandeep present near her house. The victim was taken to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, where medical report confirmed rape.

After the medical report came around 3.30 am on Thursday, Sandeep was arrested from Sector 52 about 5 am. Sandeep, 24, is a labourer and hails from Uttar Pradesh. According to the police, he has two children. His wife and children live in UP and it has been a month since Sandeep visited his family.

The accused was remanded in judicial custody.

A case has been registered against Sandeep for sexual assault under Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and for rape at Sector 36 police station.
