'Didn’t need special budgets, only state commitment'

Dr Abu Hassan Asaari B Abdullah is widely referred to as the father of One-Stop Crisis Centres in Malaysia. Madhavi Rajadhyaksha asks him about their significance to developing countries like India.

Why are one-stop crisis centres important for developing countries like ours?

Domestic violence and social crises within families as well as rape and sexual violence are on the rise in developing countries and the centre provides a client-centred, multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral service of humanistic and gendersensitive care. It facilitates all the needs of survivors such as prompt police intervention while maintaining complete privacy and confidentiality of survivors.

Such projects are usually stalled due to budgetary concerns. Do such centres involve huge expenditures?

The centre did not require high capital or operational expenditure. All that was required was a room with privacy and some funds for training personnel.
